Inequality by Natalie, Rita and Victoria
Inequality
It is a sad truth that in our day and time, inequality is still an issue. It is present in many different aspects: skin color, body shape, gender, sexual preferences…
This inequality comes from the way our societies are brainwashed when it comes to standards, and superiority. For example, in Lebanon, it is a very common belief that women with a darker skin color, can only work as maids. Moreover, it is stated in multiple articles in the magazine “Al-Jazeera” that there is in fact racial discrimination across Lebanon. In one article, it is stated that 80% of employers do not allow an off day for their maids, which is act against basic human rights. In general, a big percentage of Lebanese citizens have a sense of superiority they feel towards people with dark skin. However, there has been many sources of spreading awareness upon the subject. Many organizations and influencers have been exposing how these darker skinned people are being treated. Hence, a lot of action has been
Other forms of inequality which are stated above, are also present in Lebanon. Women have inferior rights for example. They are seen as the weaker gender by men. This inequality is most obvious when it comes to work paychecks for example. Men get rewarded more than women in many firms across Lebanon. An article by USAL(2020) states that women’s paychecks are inferior by about 16 to 19 %. This acts of harsh inequality towards Women creates a very clear type of segregation between the two genders.
Furthermore, in Lebanon, many people look down upon the idea of same sex marriage and this type of perspectives towards this topic creates a lot of hatred from the LGBTQ community towards those people who hold those opinions on them.
Similar to the Arab world, many types of discrimination is found in the United States such as racism and sexual segregation. We have seen many acts of discrimination towards the black community in recent years such as the clear hatred between the police force and the black community as well the several killings of the members of the community from other communities. For example, “ Black children in the criminal justice system are 18 times more likely to be sentenced as adults compared to white kids” (HumanRightsCareer). This helps convey the recent direct segregation and discrimination between the races in the United States. Other than racial segregation, many forms of gender discrimination towards women is found and has increasingly become worse over the years. For example, “In 2020, only 47% of women of working age participated in the labour market, compared to 74% of men – a gender gap that has remained relatively consistent since 1995” (Concern WorldWide). This type of example helps portray the discrimination towards women in many different perspectives such as the workplace. These issues have been ongoing for many years and if no solution is found, it would only get worse from here.
